Description
Quiet and peace reign in the alpine regions of the Wallowa Mountains in Oregon.
Ice Lake, high in the alpine regions of the wilderness, is a place of quiet and beauty. The air is cool, but the sun – at the high altitude – shines warm and true, casting its reflection of blue sky onto the clear, tranquil waters.
Mountain Lake, the artwork, invites the viewer to step into this wilderness landscape and hear the silence, feel the sunlight, watch for the jumping of fish on the still, placid waters. The original oil painting, at 10 x 8 inches, is almost a miniature, but much is captured in a small space. Indeed, how could any painting, regardless of how big, contain the fullness and majesty of mountains sweeping up from the lake’s surface, towering over the waters like sentinels?
In such a wilderness space, one is far away from the madding crowds, from the traffic, from the office cubicle. And while it’s convenient to have cell phone service practically every place we go, it is not always convenient to be reachable by every person who decides that we need to solve their problem, or answer their question, now. There’s something to be said for being out of reach for awhile, unavailable for contact because we are in a still, quiet, remote place, doing nothing more than sitting on the banks of the lake and looking out on the vista, thinking.
“Nothing more” than thinking! When did time away, time to ourselves, time in a beautiful place become “nothing”? It’s been that way for awhile, actually, in a corporate-based culture that has convinced us all that life’s meaning revolves around work and schedules and projects and making money for large corporations and their shareholders.
Mountain Lake reminds us that we, as creative human beings, were designed for so much more than this. We were designed to think, to wonder, to marvel, to see the beauty around us and recreate us in our own unique, beautiful lives.
